Abstract
Advancesincomputertechnologyandnetworkinginfrastructuresincombinationwithadvanced applicationsandservices,haveexpandedtheadoptionofdistributedvirtualenvironmentsand promotedtheiruseinawiderangeofareas,suchaslearningandtraining,collaborativework,military applicationsandmultiplayeronlinegames.ThecharacteristicsandrequirementsofsuchDVEsdiffer significantlygiventhediverseobjectives,scopeandcontextthateachvirtualworldaimsatsupporting. However,onecommoncharacteristicofDVEsistheirdynamicstatewithusersenteringandleavingthe systemrandomly,resultinginchangesoftherequirementsfortheDVEsystem.Thesechangesrequire effectiveloaddistributionandmanagementofthecommunicationcostsothatconsistencyisalways maintained.ThispaperpresentsadynamicmanagementapproachforDVEsdrivenbythediversityof differentapplications?characteristicsandrequirements.Thisapproachexploitsthedynamicnatureof these systemsforselectingandassigning,onanon-demandbasis,theresourcesnecessaryforthe efficientoperationofthesystem.Theexperimentsconductedtovalidatethebehavioroftheapproach illustratethatitcansignificantlyminimizecommunicationcostamongthesystemserverstogether with effectiveworkloaddistribution.
